You don’t have to be Mark Zuckerberg, Noah Glass, Biz Stone or any of the other social media moguls to own and operate your own successful online community. Which is great news, because custom online communities – where customers, clients, or members talk to and support one another - are rapidly surpassing blogs and the major social networking platforms as the very best vehicle for fostering brand loyalty and engagement. That said, what works in theory often fails miserably in practice. That’s why Katie Bapple and Joshua Paul, top experts in the field, have written a new book, The Online Community Blueprint, designed to help even small businesses master the art of online community creation and operation. Katie and Joshua, both executives at Socious, whose software engages more than 1.3 million online community members, are my guests this week on Monday Morning Radio.
Katie and Joshua will talk us through the basics of building a successful, proprietary online community. It is the cutting edge of online marketing and too important to ignore. Claire Dorotik-Nana has experienced adversity of a severity few of us will ever know. The day before Valentines Day in 2001, Claire's mother murdered her father, who was bludgeoned and strangled. Only days earlier, Claire's family seemed about as normal as they come. If that wasn’t awful enough, the lawyer defending Claire’s mother subsequently suggested that Claire, who was 24 at the time, had been the one to perpetrate the heinous crime. Under such stress, most people would have crumbled. Instead, Claire – this week’s guest on Monday Morning Radio - grew from the traumatic experience, and ever since has been helping others who face all variety of stress and trauma. Claire, a licensed therapist and popular online columnist, is the author of a new book, Leverage: The Science of Turning Setbacks into Springboards. The book offers insights that can help small business owners and entrepreneurs cultivate the necessary skills to overcome adversity, both on the job and in their private lives.
Turn up the volume, as Claire shares the amazing story of her rebound this week with host Dean Rotbart. Photo: Claire Dorotik-Nana |

Are today’s young adults ready to succeed in business and life? Most, in honesty, aren’t. The reason, observes Dr. Joanie Connell, is that too many members of the so-called millennial generation have been (silver) spoon fed for too long. This week on Monday Morning Radio Dr. Connell, author of Flying without a Helicopter: How to Prepare Young People for Work and Life, explains how she inspires young people to get R.E.A.L.: Resilient, Empowered, Authentic, and Limber.

Would you be more inclined to listen to this week’s edition of Monday Morning Radio if you knew that one lucky listener would win a Silver Aluminum Apple Watch? Perhaps. But this week’s guest, Susan Fowler, thinks such prize incentives are an awful way to win customers or to encourage employees to perform better on the job. In the long run, they don’t work. Susan, who has worked alongside management guru Ken Blanchard for more than two decades and co-authored three books with Ken, is an expert on the science of motivation.
Her own book, Why Motivating People Doesn’t Work…and What Does, explodes the conventional wisdom that to motivate others – or even yourself – you have two choices, the carrot or the stick. That may work for horses, Susan says, but not for listeners of this podcast or for any other sentient human being. Susan is interviewed by Wizard Academy faculty member Dean Rotbart, co-host of Business Unconventional, the one-hour radio newsmagazine that aired weekly on News/Talk 710 KNUS AM in Denver. For way too many small business owners and entrepreneurs, a major obstacle they regularly encounter is listening to the wrong adviser: themselves. Remember the days when where you were listed in the Yellow Pages and how eye-catching your ad was could make or break a local retail or service business? Debbie Josendale, founder and president of 3C Marketing Group, identifies five foundational components to becoming a Local Search giant. Most of what conventional financial planners tell entrepreneurs about how to grow and protect their wealth is crap. Okay, so that's not a very polite thing to say. But it's painfully true. Otherwise savvy small business owners can be totally stupid when it comes to trusting their money and investment strategies to others. That is a sermon that Garrett B. Gunderson - who became a multi-millionaire before age 27 - has been preaching from coast-to-coast business pulpits for years and is a core concept in his New York Times groundbreaking bestseller, Killing Sacred Cows. Garrett, an educator and financial advocate, is the force behind The Freedom FastTrack, a phenominal go-against-the-grain process of building and protecting your wealth that defies conventional wisdom, yet produces extraordinary results. On this week's Monday Morning Radio, Garrett unloads on commission-obsessed financial planners and explains why chasing interest rates will never produce the phenomenal wealth that comes when you chase your life's soul purpose. Garrett is interviewed by Wizard Academy faculty member Dean Rotbart and wealth management expert David Biondo. Jen Sincero Went from 'Looserville' to Mayor of 'Awesome City' and She'll Show You How You, Too, Can Become a Badass
Jen Sincero uses foul language and in-your-face candor to get the attention of potential consulting clients and the media. A one-time, self-described 'big fat looser,' Jen turned her life around and is now traveling the world advising others how to do likewise. Beneath every small business owner is an optimist who dares to dream big. Facing down challenges comes with the turf. Yet with eyes on the prize, we sometimes forget the importance of getting the little things right. Developing a habit of regularly examining our own choices can be key to success. Don Kuhl has spent decades studying how small changes can have a major impact on our lives. He’s the founder of The Change Companies, a provider of resources that assist people in making choices that result in positive changes. The company’s focus is guiding people to help themselves. “I was vice president of business for a pretty large health company and time and time again it struck me, real change is self change,” he recalls during a recent radio interview conducted with Monday Morning Radio. Don is interviewed on Monday Morning Radio by fellow Academy faculty member and graduate Dean Rotbart and by David Biondo, a veteran financial planner and successful entrepreneur. Renowned financier, philanthropist, and medical innovator Michael R. Milken is the featured guest on this week’s special edition of Monday Morning Radio. Milken spoke earlier this month in Colorado before a distinguished audience of business and political leaders, outlining for them his thoughts on the rapid and significant changes that legal immigration have brought to America and how the “changing face” of our nation will have enormous impact on business and government policy in the very near future. Milken notes that worldwide population growth and education patterns make it clear that China, India, and Latin America will be among the key global economic powers for the rest of this century. If America is to remain competitive, it must invest far more in educating our young people and re-opening our boarders to legal immigrants. Wizard Academy faculty member Dean Rotbart attended Milken’s speech and had the opportunity to meet privately with the billionaire for 40 minutes following his remarks. What Milken has to say – about the forces that are changing the world as we know it – is priceless business intelligence. As Rotbart notes at the opening of this week’s audio, portions of Milken’s remarks are difficult to hear. Rotbart recommends using earphones to capture the clearest possible audio. Those Monday Morning Radio listeners interested in hearing more of Milken’s insights and influences can also visit www.Chavura.com - a weekly broadcast radio program aimed at the Jewish community – where Rotbart and his son, Maxwell, in an exclusive interview, discuss with Milken how his Jewish roots have influenced his business and philanthropic thinking. Leadership is comparatively easy. Leading with honor requires men and women of special character and skills. So says Colonel Lee Ellis (ret.), this week's guest on Monday Morning Radio. Colonel Ellis, an Air Force fighter pilot, spent 5 1/2 years as a prisoner of war in North Vietnam. He was the youngest POW to be imprisoned along with Senator John McCain at the notorious "Hanoi Hilton." If leaders can act with honor under those circumstances, Colonel Ellis teaches, they certainly can act with honor as the heads of corporations, small businesses and nonprofits. Colonel Ellis is an author and expert in the areas of team-building, executive development and - of course - leadership. He shares his unique insights with Monday Morning Radio listeners. Colonel Ellis is interviewed by Wizard Academy faculty member and graduate Dean Rotbart and by David Biondo, a veteran financial planner and successful entrepreneur. Michael R. Drew, a veteran faculty member at The Wizard Academy, is a global superstar when it comes to helping authors propel their books onto the most-influential bestseller lists. To date, 74 books represented by Drew and his Promote-A-Book marketing agency have earned the title "bestseller." A dozen of his books, in fact, have become New York Times #1 top sellers. After helping so many others promote themselves and their books, Drew has joined with Wizard Academy co-founder Roy H. Williams to pen the new book, Pendulum: How Past Generations Shape Our Present and Predict Our Future. Drew and Promote A Book strive to build strong and real relationships with clients and their audiences, increasing sales in a natural manner, and maximizing the depth and longevity of that relationship through its Persona Architecture and Platform Building programs. Drew has presented the Pendulum theory on stage with and for the Dali Lama, Sir Richard Branson, and Steven R. Covey, and privately for the Executive Committee at Franklin Covey. Drew is interviewed exclusively on Monday Morning Radio by fellow Academy faculty member and graduate Dean Rotbart and by David Biondo, a veteran financial planner and successful entrepreneur. Peter Nevland didn't start out to be a much-in-demand business writing coach. In fact, he began his professional career as an engineer for Motorola.
