Is Dave Thorell the Best Farm Radio Personality Ever?

If you love larger-than-life personalities, you’ll enjoy hearing Dave Thorell’s colorful reflections on his career at KRVN 880 Rural Radio in Lexington, Nebraska.

Monday Morning Radio host and reputation coach Dean Rotbart and his photographer daughter Avital, drove to Nebraska to capture this broadcast legend in conversation and photos.

Fantasy Meets Reality For An Aspiring Filmmaker

Jeffrey Biers, who heads Pittsburgh-based All Season Productions, is an entrepreneur and aspiring filmmaker who has written the script and intends to play the lead character in a new Spiderman fan film. The catch: Jeff is swinging into more obstacles than success at the moment.

As many an entrepreneur can attest, pursuing your dreams can at times seem like a scene from a horror film. This week on Monday Morning Radio, Jeff shares his struggles to vanquish the business villains that stand between him and commercial and artistic success. Join host and reputation coach Dean Rotbart for a preview of Spider-Man: Night of the Hunter.

“Hello” From the Other Side of the Customer Service Line

It’s been almost exactly 140 years since Alexander Graham Bell first phoned his assistant, beckoning, “Mr. Watston – come here – I want to see you.”

While the telephone is decidedly old-school, it is still one of the most prominent and important conduits for business. Charlie Fusco specializes in turning each and every call from, or to, a business prospect into a brand-building exercise.

Charlie, founder and CEO of Synergixx, chats this week with host and reputation coach Dean Rotbart about the best – and worst – ways for a business to communicate by phone. Listen in on their call right now - and profit.

Jaw-Dropping Insights: The Origins of Idioms, Slang, & Other Common Expressions

Do you worry that your business might be going belly-up? Just launching a business means you’re not a yellow-belly, although most entrepreneurs do have a propensity to bellyache.

Are you detecting a pattern here?

Well, belly-up to the bar and share a few belly laughs this week on Monday Morning Radio as Dr. Per-Olof Hasselgren, a professor of surgery at Harvard Medical School, shares his collection of common idioms, slang, and everyday English expressions that reference body parts.

Everyone who has a nose for the language arts will find Dr. Hasselgren’s brainchild – and his new book, Body Language – From Head to Toe – an eye-opening experience.

As usual, our gutsy host, Dean Rotbart, cuts right to the heart of the matter.

The Path to Saving Global Capitalism? More Capitalists.

The former deputy speaker of the New Jersey State Assembly, a diehard Democrat, and a prominent New Jersey Republican businessman are on a bipartisan campaign to get more private businesses to give their employees partial ownership of their companies.

As Upendra Chivukula and Veny Musim view it, the only way to save capitalism is to exponentially increase the number of capitalists. Their new book, The 3rd Way, spells out the argument and backs it up with substantial empirical evidence.

This week on Monday Morning Radio, Democrat and Republican make their joint case for employee-owned businesses. Upendra and Veny are interviewed by reputation coach and host, Dean Rotbart

Eddie Gossage

As an added bonus this week, be sure to stay tuned following Dean’s interview to hear a short excerpt from Martin’s Business Milestones’ interview with the incomparable Eddie Gossage, president of the Texas Motor Speedway. TMS is celebrating its 20th Milestone Anniversary this year and will be featured soon at www.MartinsBusinessMilestones.com.

Monday Morning Radio listeners get a sneak peak of Eddie’s interview with Dr. Charles W. Martin, founder of Martin’s Business Milestones, a new website created to celebrate and support entrepreneurs. Dean serves as Editor-in-Chief of MBM.

Mind the (Generation) Gap: The Principal Financial Well-Being Index

How’s this for role reversal – Gen X and Baby Boomer business owners stand to learn a lot from (…wait for it) – Millennial business owners. That’s the conclusion of a survey of 600 American small businesses conducted for The Principal Financial Group, a Fortune 500 financial services company based in Des Moines.

Amy Friedrich, a senior vice president at The Principal who helps oversee the Index, shares the survey results and her analysis this week with host and reputation coach Dean Rotbart.

They may be younger than their Gen X and Baby Boomer peers, but Millennial-generation business owners are doing astonishingly well and also crushing it when it comes to work/life balance.

When compared to earlier generations of entrepreneurs, The Principal discovered that Millennials are working fewer hours, providing extra and innovative employee benefits, and projecting a higher level of optimism.

An article featuring a partial transcript of Dean's interview can be found on Martin’s Business Milestones at: http://wp.me/p770YJ-dq.

“Millennials are demonstrating they’re a new driving force as business owners,” says Friedrich. “Between working fewer hours, more growth and higher optimism, millennial business owners are a force to be reckoned with.”

Evan Morgenstein, president and CEO of CelebExperts, specializes in matching celebrities with businesses – including startups and not-ready-for-prime-time companies. His results have been nothing short of amazing.

This week on Monday Morning Radio, Morgenstein shares with host and reputation coach Dean Rotbart the ins-and-outs celebrity endorsements.

How to Prevent Boneheaded Management Actions (or Inactions)

For decades, Sears stores in Miami stocked snowblowers in their garden centers, even though no one ever bought one and it hasn’t snowed in Miami since 1977.

That, says Steven D. Goldstein, a former Sears senior executive, results from management disengagement – an ailment that plaques many owners and senior executives.

Steve, who has been a top executive at several Fortune 500 companies, is an evangelist for management engagement. His first book, Why Are There Snowblowers in Miami? – due out later this year, details five positive principles of engagement that can prevent boneheaded management actions.

Steve shares those principles this week on Monday Morning Radio with host and reputation coach Dean Rotbart, and answers the obvious question: What was Sears thinking?

Kickfurther Creates A Unique Business-Financing Marketplace

Success has killed more than a few companies that had plenty of orders, but not enough affordable funding to finance sufficient inventory.

Sean De Clercq and his company, Kickfurther, solve that age-old problem. Kickfurther is a unique business-funding marketplace in which investors – rather than taking equity in a company – actually purchase a share of its inventory. In exchange, the investors get a potential return on their money that trumps the stock market, mutual funds, and real estate.

Reputation coach and host Dean Rotbart brings his Monday Morning Radio microphone to Boulder, Colorado this week to take his own inventory of how Kickfurther is revolutionizing small business financing.

KRVN AM Radio Succeeds By Defining Its Mission and Sticking to It

The big party is on today in Lexington, Nebraska, as the town and nearby residents gather to celebrate 65 years since local farm radio station, KRVN, began broadcasting. There is no other radio station in America comparable to KRVN, which is owned by more than 4,000 Nebraska farmers and ranchers.

How in this day and age a rural AM radio station that concentrates on commodity prices and weather forecasts has survived and prospered holds ample lessons for all business owners and entrepreneurs. As reputation coach and host Dean Rotbart discovered, knowing your customers and working hard each day to serve them is a winning formula – both down on the farm and in major metropolitan markets.

You’re invited to join the anniversary festivities today on Monday Morning Radio, featuring interviews with KRVN general manager Craig Larson and station manager Tim Marshall. Be sure to save room for some homemade anniversary cake.

Note: On this week’s episode, Dean is joined by Dr. Charles W. Martin – “Charley” – the founder of Martin’s Business Milestones – an unprecedented nationwide campaign just getting underway that is designed to showcase and honor small business owners and entrepreneurs.

Martin’s Business Milestones - which you’ll be hearing a lot more about in the coming weeks and months - is dedicated to celebrating those businesses that have demonstrated the tenacity, agility, creativity, know-how, loyalty and experience that are required to tackle the challenges that bring down so many other small businesses. Businesses such as KRVN.

Commerce with China is a Two-Way Street, Even for Small U.S. Businesses

When most Americans think of doing business with China, they think of outsourcing American manufacturing jobs. But that’s not the big opportunity according to Mark Matsumoto. “Why buy from China when you can sell to China?”

Many small and mid-size businesses today are making jumbo profits by exporting products and services to China and other Asian Pacific markets. Thanks to modern technology, it’s easier than you might think. According to Matsumoto, who has been doing it for 25 years, all you need is a smart phone and some common sense.

You can buy his book – Exporting in the Connected World – or you can hear it straight from the expert himself as Matsumoto is interviewed on this week’s edition of Monday Morning Radio by host and reputation coach Dean Rotbart.

p.s. Do you remember when Roy H. Williams, the Wizard, and his co-author Michael Drew, talked about this very topic in Pendulum?

What Global Trends Portend for Your Business in 2016

Each year, Stratfor – which is based not far from the Wizard Academy in Austin, Texas – issues its much-anticipated predictions for what we can expect in the coming year on a geopolitical front – and how developments in areas such as the Middle East, Russia, and China will affect global economics. That includes the impact on commodity prices, the value of the U.S. dollar in global markets, and consumer consumption.

By placing global events in a geopolitical framework, Stratfor gives its clients a strategic advantage as they strive to be better prepared to seize opportunities and avoid risks.

This week’s guest on Monday Morning Radio, Sim Tack, is Stratfor’s director of analytical support. While the battlefields in Syria and Iraq, and the general political stability in Africa, may feel like there are light years removed from the day-to-day concerns of most American business owners and entrepreneurs, they are anything but.

As Sim explains to host and noted reputation coach Dean Rotbart, what’s happening a world away from Main Street USA – in our increasingly connected world economy – will impact every one of us in 2016.

This is YOUR Blind Voice (Speaking) Audition: Do You Have What It Takes?

The rain in Spain stays mainly in the plain! Perhaps. But Audrey Hepburn’s My Fair Lady transformation from a lowly Cockney flower girl to a gentile society lady with impeccable speech is anything but authentic.

It’s not that such a speech makeover isn’t possible, it’s just that the fictional professor of phonetics Henry Higgins doesn’t use the correct methodology.

Ita M. Olsen, this week’s guest on Monday Morning Radio, has spent more than two decades honing the right methods to correct speech and empower speakers. Ita is one of the world’s leading speech coaches.

Whether you’re addressing an auditorium with thousands of listeners, a bank lending committee, a radio interviewer, or your own employees, how you deliver the message can actually be more important than what you say.

Ita and her company, Convey Clearly, have trained executives at American Express, JP Morgan, New York Life Insurance and many other leading global companies on ways to effectively deliver messages so that they have the desired impact.

This week Ita shares her top insights – both on how you can speak more clearly, and why you should.

The Sharks Were Brutal, But The Owners of Switch Witch Remain Resolute

A few days after Lara Spear Riley and Rob Bouley were guests on Monday Morning Radio this past October, they appeared on ABC-TV’s Shark Tank, asking $55,000 for a 25% equity stake in their company, Switch Witch. Instead of funding, Lara and Rob got ridicule and left empty-handed.

Shark Kevin O’Leary was blunt: “If I were you, I’d take this behind the barn and burn it. Because I think it sucks.”

This week, Lara and Rob return to Monday Morning Radio to reflect on their Shark Tank experience and offer other entrepreneurs some surprising advice about whether or not to follow them into the Shark Tank.

As you'll hear, Lara and Rob are troopers. Despite getting slammed on air - with family, friends, and customers watching, they report that 2015 Halloween sales were strong and they are marching ahead. To be a successful entrepreneur, you have to have a fighting spirit and get back up even when you've been knocked to the ground.

Be sure to also listen to our first interview with Lara and Rob. Although they couldn't tell anyone when they spoke to us back in October, they already knew that the Sharks had taken a big bite out of them. Nonetheless, their comments on the judges and the program were - and continue to be - nothing but classy.

An Under the Covers Report: Meet Kangapoda’s Eclectic Founder

The human foot contains 26 bones, 33 joints, and more than 100 muscles, tendons, and ligaments. Perfect for walking. But when many people tuck their tootsies under their bed covers – to read or sleep - they wind up with leg and foot pain, and cramps.

Hal Mintz was one such sufferer. So the seasoned entrepreneur and venture capitalist set out to invent better bedding. The result: Kangapoda, a line of U.S. made, patented ergonomic sheets and blankets that offer relief to bedtime foot-pain sufferers.

This week on Monday Morning Radio, host and reputation coach Dean Rotbart goes under the covers to get the skinny on Kangapoda and its unconventional challenge to mainstream bedding manufacturers.

This App Can Prevent Distracted Teen Driving

Can a free phone and desktop application reduce the incidents of distracted teenage driving?

Las Vegas entrepreneurs Leon Wilde and Phil Randazzo believe it can, and they are betting their ample experience as successful business owners and investors on DriveSafe Mode, a patented application they designed to save lives – and parental anxiety.

Think of DriveSafe Mode as a 24/7 tattletale. If your teen is texting, tweeting, snapchatting, of otherwise posting – when he or she is in a moving vehicle, DriveSafe Mode can shut down the phone and notify you immediately. If your teen tries to disable the application, DriveSafe Mode will let you know that as well.

This week on Monday Morning Radio, Leon and Phil tell host and noted reputation coach Dean Rotbart how they are navigating the highly competitive web app marketplace, and why they believe DriveSafe Mode is their express lane to a much larger, more successful suite of profitable products.

Behind the Scenes at ABC-TV’s Shark Tank

Business partners Lara Spear Riley and Rob Bouley are the co-creators of Switch Witch, a Halloween-themed plush doll, cauldron, and accompanying storybook. Come Halloween, children dress up and still go trick-or-treating. Only when the kids get home, they deposit a portion of their candy stash with their Switch Witch, and in the morning – Presto, Change-o – the candy has been transformed into a special switch gift.

The real magic is how this unlikely product and duo caught the attention of the producers at ABC-TV’s Shark Tank. Riley and Bouley will face off against the notorious panel of sharks on Friday, October 23, 2015, at 9 pm Eastern Day Time.

But first, Riley and Bouley share their own entrepreneurial tale - and the steps they took to earn a spot on Shark Tank - with reputation coach and Monday Morning Radio host Dean Rotbart - our resident guppy.

“Who Am I, If Not My Company?”

Groucho Marx famously used to warble, “Hello, I must be going.”

Most business owners don’t pay nearly enough attention to their eventual exits, nor are they prepared to answer the soul-searching question, “Who am I, if not my company.”

Enter Dr. Pamela Dennis, author of Exit Signs – The Expressway to Selling Your Company with Pride and Profit. She successfully sold her own multi-million consulting practice and has never regretted it for a moment. Janelle and Matt’s Wedding and the Marketing Lessons it Offers

On October 8th, in Ogden, Utah, Janelle Page and Matt Misbach will seal their love by exchanging wedding vows in front of a large gathering of family, friends, neighbors and colleagues.

Theirs is not only a story of romance, it’s also a valuable lesson in personal branding and video marketing. Divorced and the mother of four, Janelle was having no luck attracting eligible suitors last year when she decided to apply her business experience - using video testimonials to help her clients generate more leads and make more sales - to the dating game.

Her 8 ½ minute autobiographical YouTube video, #ManHunt, spelled out exactly who she is, who she is looking for, and who need not apply. It worked.

Janelle and Matt share their tale this week on Monday Morning Radio with host and reputation coach Dean Rotbart. As Dean points out, mass marketing is great, but sometimes superfluous. “Whether you’re looking for a spouse, an employee, an investor, or a few new clients, laser-targeted marketing might just prove a perfect match for you as well,” Rotbart observes.

Janelle is the CEO of KickFire, based in Kaysville, UT. Her firm specializes in customized, laser-beam focused marketing campaigns.

Online Communities Surpass Blogs for Generating Customer Engagement

You don’t have to be Mark Zuckerberg, Noah Glass, Biz Stone or any of the other social media moguls to own and operate your own successful online community.

Which is great news, because custom online communities – where customers, clients, or members talk to and support one another - are rapidly surpassing blogs and the major social networking platforms as the very best vehicle for fostering brand loyalty and engagement.

That said, what works in theory often fails miserably in practice.

That’s why Katie Bapple and Joshua Paul, top experts in the field, have written a new book, The Online Community Blueprint, designed to help even small businesses master the art of online community creation and operation.

Katie and Joshua, both executives at Socious, whose software engages more than 1.3 million online community members, are my guests this week on Monday Morning Radio.

Katie and Joshua will talk us through the basics of building a successful, proprietary online community. It is the cutting edge of online marketing and too important to ignore.

Leveraging Adversity: Turning Your Business Woes into Assets

Claire Dorotik-Nana has experienced adversity of a severity few of us will ever know.

The day before Valentines Day in 2001, Claire's mother murdered her father, who was bludgeoned and strangled. Only days earlier, Claire's family seemed about as normal as they come.

If that wasn’t awful enough, the lawyer defending Claire’s mother subsequently suggested that Claire, who was 24 at the time, had been the one to perpetrate the heinous crime.

Under such stress, most people would have crumbled.

Instead, Claire – this week’s guest on Monday Morning Radio - grew from the traumatic experience, and ever since has been helping others who face all variety of stress and trauma.

Claire, a licensed therapist and popular online columnist, is the author of a new book, Leverage: The Science of Turning Setbacks into Springboards. The book offers insights that can help small business owners and entrepreneurs cultivate the necessary skills to overcome adversity, both on the job and in their private lives.

Flying Without a Helicopter: Helping Young People Better Prepare for Business and Life

Are today’s young adults ready to succeed in business and life? Most, in honesty, aren’t. The reason, observes Dr. Joanie Connell, is that too many members of the so-called millennial generation have been (silver) spoon fed for too long.

A Fool's Errand: Trying to Motivate Employees with a Carrot or a Stick

Would you be more inclined to listen to this week’s edition of Monday Morning Radio if you knew that one lucky listener would win a Silver Aluminum Apple Watch? Perhaps.

But this week’s guest, Susan Fowler, thinks such prize incentives are an awful way to win customers or to encourage employees to perform better on the job. In the long run, they don’t work.

Susan, who has worked alongside management guru Ken Blanchard for more than two decades and co-authored three books with Ken, is an expert on the science of motivation.

Her own book, Why Motivating People Doesn’t Work…and What Does, explodes the conventional wisdom that to motivate others – or even yourself – you have two choices, the carrot or the stick. That may work for horses, Susan says, but not for listeners of this podcast or for any other sentient human being.

Susan is interviewed by Wizard Academy faculty member Dean Rotbart, co-host of Business Unconventional, the one-hour radio newsmagazine that aired weekly on News/Talk 710 KNUS AM in Denver.

Remaking the Global Wine Industry, One Keg at a Time

Wine dispensed from stainless steel kegs has begun to flow from some of the nation's top vineyards and restaurants.  At the forefront of this liquid revolution are Napa-based Free Flow Wines and its CEO and co-founder, Jordan Kivelstadt.

Free Flow Wines is defying convention in asking fine restaurants and other venues to shift from bottles to kegs. It's a business challenge worthy of Dionysus, the Greek god of wine. This week on Monday Morning Radio, Kivelstadt uncorks his secret plan to bring technological and environmental innovation to the age-old wine industry.

p.s. Just a few short weeks ago, the Wizard Academy's resident oenophile, our very own Roy H. Williams, sipped his very first glass of wine on tap. Sacrilege? Apostasy? Depravity?

Dr. Bo Knows: Podcasts Deliver an Audience and Results

Is podcasting an effective marketing tool?

Bo Bennett sure thinks so. The serial entrepreneur just launched his 7th podcast – The Dr. Bo Show. “Dr. Bo” – who has a Ph.D. in social psychology – finds that podcasts deliver a steady stream of customers for his various ventures, including online courses, public speaking, and ebooks.

Inventors Are a Stubborn Lot - Failure is Not a Disincentive

The odds that would-be inventors will cash in their innovations for a giant payday are astronomically small.

Each year tens of thousands of Americans – driven by a hunger to make life a little simpler or more rewarding – aim to bring their innovations to market. The vast majority of them fail. For more than 30 years, InventHelp, a Pittsburgh-based inventor service company, has aimed to improve the odds for their inventor-clients.

This week on Monday Morning Radio, InventHelp’s Nicole M. Lininger, who has worked for the company for more than 13 years, recounts some of the savvy methods used by the lucky few who do beat the long odds. Hint: Persistence pays.

A "We" Generation Success: BM Windows and Michal Bohm

When America is living through a “Me” generation, we admire bold, assertive people.

This is that time when multilevel marketing thrives and hard-sell pressure tactics work best. And the most cutthroat salesmen of all go into the business of selling replacement windows. But when the pendulum has swung into a “We” generation – such as we’re in today – we admire people who are considerate.

Michal Bohm is the highly considerate owner of BM Windows, a replacement window company that has risen to the top of the market through a consumer-friendly website that stresses education, not sales.

Listen in as Michal tells Dean Rotbart, host of Monday Morning Radio and Business Unconventional, how ethical behavior and a customer-friendly website put his company at the top of the heap. Michal and Dean are waiting for you right now.

GetOutfitted.com's Julian Flores on Executing Complex Business Operations

"All men dream: but not equally. Those who dream by night in the dusty recesses of their minds wake in the day to find that it was vanity: but the dreamers of the day are dangerous men, for they may act their dream with open eyes, to make it possible.”

When Lawrence of Arabia wrote those words, he could easily have been speaking of Julian Flores of GetOutfitted.com. Julian’s dream was that skiers from anywhere in the world would be able to rent all their ski gear with just a few clicks on a website – clothing, goggles, skis, boots and even action cameras – and have it delivered to their mountain lodge to await their arrival.

To make this dream happen by the light of day is a logistical ballet worthy of NASA or Amazon.com. If your dream requires that you execute complex operations with incredible precision, you’ll definitely want to be wide awake when you listen to Julian Flores tell Dean Rotbart how his dream came alive – and went skiing – at MondayMorningRadio.com

Turning AFFORMATIONS Into Small Business Success Fuel - With Noah St. John

For way too many small business owners and entrepreneurs, a major obstacle they regularly encounter is listening to the wrong adviser: themselves.

What you say to yourself, ask yourself, and think DOES make a huge difference in how well you perform in business and life.  That is the premise behind AFFORMATIONS: The Miracle of Positive Self-Talk, a new book that author Noah St. John promises will help busy people "accelerate income, boost self-confidence, and make success automatic."

This week on Monday Morning Radio, Noah shares with listeners his own Afformations. It's kind of like a Vulcan mind meld, only you don't need to be a Vulcan and have pointy ears to get inside Noah's head.

Noah is interviewed by Wizard Academy faculty member Dean Rotbart.  Dean and wealth management expert David Biondo are co-hosts of Business Unconventional. The one-hour radio newsmagazine debuted in October 2011 on News/Talk 710 KNUS AM in Denver.
